Information about the German School Sharjah
The German School Sharjah is a private, non-profit school established in 1976 under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah. The school is recognized by the Ministry of Education of Sharjah, and is officially accredited by the German government, which supports the school financially and sends a number of teachers from Germany to teach at the DSS.
A school board is elected yearly by parents, and is in charge of the administrative organisation of the school.
The co-educational school offers a Kindergarten, a Primary School (Grades 1 - 4), and a Secondary School (Grades 5 - 10). During Grade 5 students of all ability levels are still taught together, after which they are graded according to the ability levels of the German tripartite school system: Basic School (Hauptschule), Middle School (Realschule), and High School (Gymnasium).
Students at Hauptschule level can obtain their final exams (Hauptschulabschluss) at the end of Grade 9, students at Realschule level pass exams at the end of Grade 10 (Realschulabschluss).
From 2012, High School students will be able to pass the general qualification for university entrance, (the Deutsche Internationale Abiturprüfung - DIAP), after completing Grade 12. The DIAP is comparable with the International Baccalaureate Diploma and British A-Levels.
A dedicated team of highly qualified and committed teachers provides the students with a total learning experience, ensuring that students are able to reach their full academic potential.
The school offers the highest international standards of teaching in accordance with the curriculum of Thüringen, which has been adapted to the situation in the United Arab Emirates.
Lessons are taught in German, and all students learn English and Arabic from Kindergarten onwards. In Grade 6 they also begin to study French. From Grade 8, Geography is taught in English, and from Grade 9, History lessons are bilingual in German and English.
As all German schools abroad, the DSS offers students not only access to the German language and German educational system, but a positive attitude towards the life and culture of others.
In keeping with our school’s philosophy we build a school
• Under the common roof of German and Arab culture
• Within a positive climate and a stimulating learning environment
• With open communication and close co-operation of all
• Where foreign languages open minds and give students self-confidence
• On the basis of mutual respect and tolerance
• With a focus on excellent instruction at a high level
• Which rewards creativity, individuality and responsibility
• In which clear boundaries ensure security
• And good organization forms a secure foundation
